Pacific Coast Special
Pacific Coast Special is the second ground up build done by Pacific Coast Customs. The car, a 1929 Ford Woody Roadster, started out as a High School club project at Napa High School. The Napa High Rods and Roadsters club was founded by Bill Newton and Bill Simons (the wood shop and machine shop teachers) and promoted the street rodding industry to High School students. The plan was to build a complete car, the machine shop building the chassis and drivetrain and the wood shop building the body. The car was finished as a pusher when both teachers went into retirement and the car was sold to start a scholarship fund. When we purchased the car we tore it down to get it to driving condition and along the route found that we thought the “highboy” look was better suited for the wood body.
The entire car has since been rebuilt with the only thing remaining of the original car being the wood body and doors. The Roadster sits on a So-Cal Speed Shop chassis that has been modified slightly. The metal panels were assembled using some handmade pieces, some original pieces and some Brookville Roadster pieces. Armond Patrino re-did all of the woodwork on the body, and Kyle Martin shot the paint. Alberto Hernandez handled almost all of the bodywork on it, the complete re-build was done in less then a year when the decision was made to compete for the AMBR title at the Grand National Roadster Show in 2008. We didn’t earn the title, but we did go home with Best Engine in the AMBR class.
